Yesterday Mason's Worldview 3 class had it's long anticipated Creation vs Evolution trial. The charge to be prosecuted was: "The body of empirical scientific data does not support the theory of evolution." The teacher assigned roles, and Mason was assigned to be the defense attorney. This means that he had to defend evolution! As an aside, I know that people land in different places on the issue of having their child study and defend something he does not believe. Most of the comments I have heard have been along the lines of "it is great to know the other side of an issue so well so that you can defend the truth when the time arises." I do know that others feel differently. I will say here that after all the studying Mason did for this trial he said that evolution is "such a joke" that he does not understand how anyone believes in it.
The jury was made up of Worldview 2 students, and Mallory was one of them. The jury was told to vote based on which team presented their argument the best. This trial happens every year, and every year the creation team wins. It is too hard for the students to put aside their personal feelings on this issue. This year was no different; evolution lost. Mason anticipated losing all along, but he wanted to do a good job in the role he was assigned. He did super, and we were very proud of him.
Mason's class...
Mason led this defense team.
Here he is giving his opening remarks. The pictures and video are so bad because I had to sit on the floor for the entire trial.
He did a good job with his cross examination.
This is Mason cross examining a prosecution witness.
After the prosecution's testimony, Mason gave the defense's argument again. Here is a small sample of it. I tried to load the big clip, but it did not work. That is probably just as well. It is bizarre to hear my son talk about how he will prove that man evolved from apes. Again, he does NOT believe that!!
The trial was a lot of work, but it was a great experience for the students. Mason was so tired from all his prep work over the past weeks that he fell asleep in the car on the way home. He then continued his nap at home! It was hard for me to let him sleep during the day, but I gave in. Aren't you proud of me??

WOW! He looked so natural and comfortable, and public speaking ranks among the greatest fears of the vast majority! Must have been so hard for Mason to say some of those things, but he certainly did the job he was assigned to do! Good job on the nap, Kel; he earned dit! Aunt Julie
Sweet boy, I'm all for the naps!! I so enjoyed the pics and clip and am so very proud of him!
